Acculturative Stress of North Korean Senior Defectors: Mediating Effects of Loneliness

|
This purposes of this research were to examine the level of acculturative stress of North Korean senior defectors and to observe the mediating effects of loneliness between PTSD, physical health, and social support and acculturative stress. A total of 215 North Korean senior defectors aged 50 and more based on the data system for North Korean defectors were selected for data collection. Reuslts showed that the level of acculturative stress for North Korean senior defectors scored 2.84 out of a 5 point scale. PTSD, physical health, social support, and loneliness had direct effects on acculturative stress. Loneliness was appeared as a mediator between PTSD, physical health, and social support and acculturative stress. Based on the results, treatment of trauma by psychological support, provision of various social support, health care management, social participation should be provided to reduce loneliness of these population. Then, further practical intervention methods for improving social adaptation of North Korean defectors in South Korea were discussed.
